Our Vision
The mission of the program is to educate professional nurses who, in accordance with Atatürk’s Principles and Reforms, are committed to ethical values and scientific principles, aware of their responsibilities to their nation, and dedicated to protecting, promoting, and sustaining the health of individuals, families, and communities. The program aims to cultivate nurses who possess a holistic perspective, demonstrate effective communication and collaboration, exhibit leadership and sound decision-making skills, engage in critical inquiry, and embrace lifelong learning as a core professional value.
General Information
Students are admitted to the undergraduate Nursing Program through the centralized examination administered by the Student Selection and Placement Center (ÖSYM) under the authority of the Council of Higher Education (YÖK) of the Republic of Türkiye. Upon successful completion of the four-year curriculum, graduates are awarded a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (B.Sc. Nursing) degree. Graduates of the program are qualified to work as professional nurses or nurse managers in various healthcare settings—both public and private—that provide preventive, therapeutic, and rehabilitative services. Furthermore, graduates who aspire to pursue an academic career may continue their education through master’s and doctoral programs offered by higher education institutions. The primary objective of the nursing education program is to educate competent, professional nurses who are able to: Assume active roles in protecting, promoting, and maintaining health while identifying the needs of individuals, families, and communities; Deliver high-quality, evidence-based, and holistic nursing care using critical thinking and prioritization skills; Implement all phases of the nursing process, including data collection, nursing diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation of care outcomes; Demonstrate empathy and a deep understanding of human beings; Maintain effective interpersonal communication and collaboration with patients, families, and healthcare teams; Embrace lifelong learning and professional development as a personal and professional responsibility; Exhibit leadership, adaptability, and innovation to contribute to the advancement of the nursing profession; Uphold legal, ethical, and professional principles in all aspects of nursing practice.
History
As one of the most established universities in Türkiye, our institution was founded under Law No. 3837, which was published in the Official Gazette dated July 11, 1992, and numbered 21281. Pursuant to an agreement signed between the Council of Higher Education (YÖK) and the Ministry of Health, the School of Health was established on September 10, 1992, and commenced education at the associate degree level. By the Council of Ministers’ Decision No. 96/685 dated November 2, 1996, it was renamed Balıkesir School of Health and elevated to the undergraduate level of education.
Following the amendment to the Nursing Law enacted on April 25, 2007, the Department of Health Officer Training was closed, and education continued under the Department of Nursing.
Subsequently, as per the Council of Ministers’ Decision No. 2018/11959 published in the Official Gazette dated June 14, 2018, and numbered 30451, the School of Health Sciences was closed, and the program was incorporated under the Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS).
Furthermore, the proposal by the Rectorate of Balıkesir University to establish graduate programs within the Institute of Health Sciences was reviewed at the meeting of the Executive Board of Higher Education held on February 19, 2020. In accordance with Articles 4 and 7 of the Regulation on the Organization and Operation of Graduate Education Institutes, and taking into account the General Assembly Decision of the Council of Higher Education dated December 25, 2014, a Master of Science in Public Health Nursing (with Thesis) program has been established within the Department of Public Health Nursing under the Institute of Health Sciences.
